Protest being held against Syrian refugees in south-eastern Turkey

A protest is being today held against Syrian refugees in Turkey's south-eastern province of Kahramanmaras, Turkish newspaper Milliyet reported.

The protest is being held under the slogan "No to Syrian refugees in Turkey", with the participation of over 100 people.

The police prevented the protesters to approach the Syrian refugee camps in the province's territory, using water cannons to disperse the protesters. Two of the protesters have reportedly been arrested.

The Syrian conflict, which broke out in March 2011, has killed over 150,000 people, and more than 4.2 million people have become refugees in the Syrian territory, whole 2.3 million people have fled to neighboring countries.

Syrian refugees mainly fled to Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey. Syria's total population was 20 million people before the conflict.

There are over one million Syrian refugees in Turkey, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD).
