The U.S. is violating its obligations towards the UN by not issuing a visa to Iran's envoy, the Islamic Republic's MP believes.

"The US is clearly interfering in the United Nations' affairs by denying visa to Iran's newly-appointed UN ambassador Hamid Aboutalebi," member of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Javad Jahangirzadeh said, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on April 17.

Jahangirzadeh went on to note that as a host country for the United Nations the US must issue a visa to the country's envoy to the UN according to its agreement.

He also remarked that the visa denial is a "suitable message to the few US supporters in Iran."

The visa denial issue also showed that the US is not obligated to the UN rules, the MP added.

The White House said on April 11 that the United States has informed Iran that it would not grant a visa to Aboutalebi, a member of the group responsible for the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran.

Earlier the House of Representatives and the Senate voted to prevent Aboutalebi from entering the US.

Iran's foreign ministry has slammed the U.S. stance on the new ambassador as "unacceptable."

Iranian deputy foreign minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi said on April 13 that the foreign ministry is pursuing the issue through legal mechanisms at the UN.
