Kyrgyz ex-president sentenced to 24 years in prison in absentia

Bishkek Harrison Military Court handed down a sentence to Kurmanbek and Janysh Bakiyevs, KirTAG reported on Tuesday, referring to the press service of the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan. According to the report, the court found Kurmanbek Bakiyev guilty of a crime under part four of Article 304 of the Criminal Code.

Bishkek Harrison Military Court handed down a sentence to Kurmanbek and Janysh Bakiyevs, KirTAG reported on Tuesday, referring to the press service of the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan.

According to the report, the court found Kurmanbek Bakiyev guilty of a crime under part four of Article 304 of the Criminal Code.

In accordance with Article 59 of the Criminal Code, the final punishment of 24 years of imprisonment is to be served in a maximum security colony with confiscation of property.
According to the report, Janysh Bakiyev was sentenced to life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

In accordance with Article 51 of the Criminal Code, the former head of the State Security Service was stripped of the military rank of lieutenant-general.

In April 2010 a coup in Kyrgyzstan resulted in the resignation of the second President of Kyrgyzstan, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who came to power by overthrowing President Askar Akayev in 2005.

Former President Bakiyev and some of his closest supporters including his sons and brother left the country and have been put on the international wanted list. April events engulfed the country into the riots that resulted in the bloody ethnic conflict between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks living in the southern part of the country.
