Tajik President Emomali Rahmon will pay an official visit to Turkmenistan in the second half of August, the Turkmen government said today. The issues of preparing the visit were raised at the government meeting.
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed that Turkmen-Tajik relations based on ancestral traditions of friendship, mutual understanding and trust have reached a new development.
He said that the joint intergovernmental commission which is an important mechanism for strengthening economic, trade and humanitarian cooperation has a significant role in enhancing bilateral relations.
The last session of the Intergovernmental Commission was held in Dushanbe on July24-26. The specific directions and measures aimed at further expanding the fruitful bilateral cooperation were determined.
The trade, economic sector, energy, textile and light industries, agriculture and transport are among the priority areas.
It is expected that the two countries will sign several important new documents during the upcoming summit talks in Ashgabat.
Tajikistan is experiencing a shortage of energy resources. Turkmenistan is the largest supplier of energy resources in Central Asia. The existing transport infrastructure allows Ashgabat to export electricity to Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asia.
Following the recent cessation of gas supplies from Uzbekistan, Dushanbe expects to gain access to Turkmen energy resources, including natural fuel.
