Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparst said that Syrian rebels and their supporters are responsible for safety of 48 Iranians who were kidnapped in Syria, IRIB news reported today.

Though a video released on You Tube, Syrian rebels said they will kill a group of Iranians captured in Syria in August after 48 hours, if Syrian regime and Iran do not put end to strike over Syrian citizens.

Syrian rebels say that this group consists of members of Iran's military force, IRGC.

Head of the Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Mohammad-Ali Jafari confirmed in September that Iran had former members of the Guard in Syria, but he said that this does not mean Iran's military presence over there.

Earlier, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi said that some of kidnapped persons are retired military officers who went to Syria as pilgrims.

Mehmanparst said that Syrian rebels use Iranian kidnapped citizens as "humanitarian shield in the war with government".

Bloodshed between the Syrian government and opposition groups has continued for 19 months, leaving more than 24,000 victims. In August, more than 3,000 Syrians were killed.

Iran strongly defends the Syrian government.
