Iran will establish a new port city neighboring the Caspian Sea, near Amirabad port, IRIB quoted Amirabad Special Economic Zone director Ali Naeimi as saying.

"The establishment of a new port city near Amirabad seems to be necessary considering Amirabad's expansion during the past three years. The ports' shipment capacity has increased fourfold to four million tons and the number of people working at the port has increased from 400 to 1100 during the past three years," he added.

The shipment capacity is projected to increase to 6.5 million tons by the next three years, he said.

In February, Naeimi said that more than 3.1 million tons of goods were loaded and unloaded at Amirabad port.

Amirabad port is equipped with the most advanced maritime and telecommunication facilities and is apt for industrial and trade investments, he added.

The port was officially inaugurated in 2008.

On February 2, ISNA quoted head of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization Ataollah Sadr as saying that building 60 small and multi-purpose ports across Iran is underway.

Sadr went on to say that 11 major ports of Iran have the loading and unloading capacity of up to 172 million tons.
