Iran commiserates with Brazil on plane crash

Iran has extended condolences to the Brazilian government and nation over the death of the country's presidential candidate and his entourage in a recent plane crash, PressTV reported.

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham voiced regret over the death of Eduardo Campos in the Wednesday incident, expressing sympathy with the bereaved.

A private aircraft carrying Campos and six other people crashed in a residential area as it prepared to land in Brazil's coastal city of Santos. Officials blame bad weather for the tragedy that killed all the seven people on board.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has declared three days of national mourning over the deadly incident, which has thrown the October presidential election in the Latin American country into disarray. Rousseff also announced that she would suspend all election campaigning for three days.

"Brazil lost a young leader with an extremely promising future, a man who could reach the highest offices of the country," said the Brazilian leader in a televised address following the incident.

The 49-year-old presidential candidate was in third place in polls with the support of about ten percent of Brazilian voters.

Analysts say the death of Campos could make it harder for Rousseff to win a second term in office, especially if his running mate Marina Silva runs in his place.

Silva is better known nationally than Campos and his candidacy could lead to a decline in Rousseff's support among leftist and younger voters.
