Scores of people were wounded on Friday in clashes between protesters and government loyalists in the city of Zarqa, 20 kilometres east of Amman, eye witnesses said, reported dpa.

Policemen used teargas canisters to disperse protesters, belonging mainly to the Islamic Salafi groups, who were also attacked by government supporters, they added.

"Several people were wounded,, including policemen," one witness said. There has been no word from the authorities so far.

The Salafis demonstrated after Friday prayers to demand reforms and press for the release of their relatives currently serving jail terms after being condemned by the State Security Court for involvement in terrorist activities.

Demonstrations to demand reforms were conducted peacefully in Amman and other major cities earlier in the day.
