The EU countries should do more to help resettle refugees stranded on the Tunisia-Libya border in deplorable conditions, members of the European Parliament stressed in a debate with Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom on Wednesday evening.

This is "embarrassing" and "shameful" for the EU, MEPs said, recalling its commitment to support Tunisia following the fall of Ben Ali's regime.

They also praised the Tunisian people's hospitality in keeping the door open to those who fled Libya.

Ms Malmstrom agreed on the need for solidarity and responsibility-sharing, but underlined that the ultimate decision to receive refugees has to be taken by each Member State. So far, only seven EU countries have pledged to resettle refugees.
