At least 10 people were killed Thursday in a car bombing at an Iraqi army recruiting centre in the capital Baghdad, police said.

Twenty others were wounded when the car, driven by a suicide bomber, went off as a crowd gathered at the centre near the military airport Muthenna in Baghdad, dpa reported.

The recruits were gathering to be transferred to the western province of Anbar, where the army has been fighting al-Qaeda-linked militants.

In December, the Iraqi military launched an operation in Anbar after 16 military personnel, including a senior commander, were killed in an attack by militants.

Insurgents have taken control of the city of Fallujah in the province.

Clashes in Anbar have raised fears of a Syria-style civil war.

According to UN estimates, 8,868 people were killed in 2013, the highest annual death toll in Iraq in five years.
