A Belgian tourist has been severely injured after he was attacked with a knife by an Egyptian man in the city of Aswan, police said.

The attacker reportedly attempted to behead the 29-year-old, who was on a sightseeing tour in the southern city with nine other tourists, DPA reported.

Police said that local people overpowered the attacker, and brought him to the authorities. The Belgian man is in a serious condition in hospital.

Security sources told the German Press Agency dpa that the attacker had been a lecturer at the Al-Azhar university in Cairo, and was known to have psychological problems.

Police ruled out that the attacker was a member of a terrorist organization.
