Norway "shocked" over flotilla attack, calls for independent probe

The Norwegian government was "shocked" by reports that Israeli commandos had attacked a fleet of boats carrying humanitarian aid headed for Gaza, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said Monday.

At least 10 deaths have been reported.

"This kind of military attack on civilian activists is completely unacceptable," Stoltenberg told reporters, adding that "an independent international review into what happened" was needed "as soon as possible", DPA reported.

"There will of course be different views (of the attack), this further strengthens the case for an independent international review," Stoltenberg said.

The events gave further support to the view held by "Norway and many other countries that the blockade of Gaza has to be lifted as soon as possible," the Norwegian premier said.

Three Norwegian nationals were reported to be on board the six ships carrying around 700 pro-Palestinian activists.
