Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner were on Monday for security reasons flown out of the Georgian town of Gori near the South Ossetian border, reported dpa .

"The situation was tense, it was relatively dangerous," a spokesman for the French foreign ministry said in Paris.

Kouchner was flown to the Russian city of Vladikavkas, from where he would travel to Moscow, the spokesman said.

According to a report by France's Le Figaro newspaper, a helicopter of unknown origin had concerned security officials. Bodyguards had ushered both politicians into an armoured vehicle.

Saakashvili and Kouchner had been visiting victims of the conflict in Gori.

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, which currently chairs the European Union, was expected to arrive in the region on Tuesday.
