Azerbaijan and Iran have a great potential for developing relations in various fields, including cultural, religious and historical spheres, the Iranian Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said during his visit to the province of Ardabil, Fars News Agency reported.

Security and stability on the border between two countries depends on the will of the Azerbaijani and Iranian leaderships to strengthen bilateral relations, Vahidi added.

He has praised the level of relations between Azerbaijan and Iran in the military field and underlined the importance of expanding military cooperation between Baku and Tehran.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in the province of Ardabil, which is located on the Azerbaijan-Iran border, on Sept. 14.

On the first day of his tour to the province, Ahmadinejad visited the cities of Halhal, Kovsar, Nir. On Thursday, he left for Bilasuvar, Parsabad, Germany, Meshkinshahr and Namin bordering Azerbaijan.

During his speech in the Parsabad city on the Iranian-Azerbaijani border, the Iranian President said no factor is able to affect the fraternal relations between Azerbaijan and Iran.

Tehran is interested in developing relations with Azerbaijan in the border regions and expanding joint activities at checkpoints on the border areas, he added.
