The residence of the Azerbaijani ambassador to Syria and Lebanon will be temporarily transferred to Beirut, Ambassador Mahir Aliyev told Trend today.

"The events in Lebanon require the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in Beirut," Aliyev said.

The ambassador said that he will fly to Beirut in early October.

The ambassador and the Azerbaijani Embassy employees in Syria and Lebanon residing in Damascus left Syria in early August due to a threat to security in the country.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.

According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria is nearing 20,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
