Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 29 / Trend H.Valiyev /

Earthquakes with catastrophic consequences are not expected in Azerbaijan, the National Seismological Centre (NSC) informed Trend on Saturday.

As stated by the NSC, currently, tensions in Balakan area are still awake, and most likely the smaller tremors will occur in the area. Similar disasters can occur in other areas of the Republic, such as Shamakhi region.

"But this does not mean that there will be disastrous consequences. Earthquake is a natural process. Azerbaijan is located in an active seismic zone. Earthquakes of magnitude three to five points occur almost on daily basis. During the year the number of tremors reaches up to 4,000," the NSC informed.

According to the National Seismological Centre, compared to indicators of monitoring held by the NSC on Caspian segment, maximum activity this year was recorded in the northern part of the Caspian Sea, in comparison with which there is almost no activity in the southern part.

In general, given the background level, earthquakes happen all the time and don't constitute a menace.
