The Azerbaijani athlete, Taras Matviichuk, proceeded to the semi-finals in the men’s canoe event qualifying heat on June 14 as part of the Baku 2015 European Games.

The Azerbaijani athlete, Taras Matviichuk, proceeded to the semi-finals in the men's canoe event qualifying heat on June 14 as part of the Baku 2015 European Games.

Qualifying and semi-final heats will be held on the first day of the competitions, which are being held in Azerbaijan's Mingachevir.

Matviichuk earlier came in fourth in the men's canoe single 1000 meters qualifying heat.

Thus, he proceeds to the next stage. In the semi-finals, to be held on June 15 at 3:54 p.m., Matviichuk will compete on the fourth track.

The kayak event as part of the Games will involve 31 athletes. Four heats took place in the qualifying round of this event.

Azerbaijan's representative, Tamerlan Mustafayev, competed on the eighth track.

Germany's representative qualified to the finals in this event, while Mustafayev came in last, failing to proceed to the next stage.

The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12, will last till June 28.

There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
