The opening ceremony of the first European Games was very, very beautiful, it showed a lot of the great traditions and culture of Azerbaijan, former minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management of the Netherlands, a former member of the European Parliament Camiel Eurlings told Trend June 15.

He said that it was a very lively show with many "wow" moments.

"We were really surprised by everything that was happening, what I liked the most is the pride of Azerbaijani people at the stadium, they were so proud, so happy, so cheerful," he said. "It was a great evening."

"I like Baku very much, it is my first time here," he said. He went on to add that he heard about Baku before but it surpassed all his expectations, it is a beautiful city that combines many old parts with modern parts. "People are very friendly, I am very happy to be here and I will surely come back," he said.

Camiel went on to add that he tried the Azerbaijani cuisine and it is very tasty and diverse.

"It is great to have so many cultures coming together," he said.

The European Games that kicked off in Baku June 12 and will last till June 28.

There is a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports. More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
