The Azerbaijani closed joint-stock company Baku Metro and the French company Bouygues Travaux Publics signed a design and build contract worth around 147 million EUR for separation of the red and green lines of the May 28 station of the Baku metro, according to the website of the company Bouygues Construction.

Bouygues Travaux Publics will construct two caverns around the existing tubes, which will make it possible to build the new tunnels.

"The works are scheduled to begin in February 2015, and will involve 250 people at peak periods," the company said.

With the separation of the red and green lines, and using the May 28-Jafar Jabbarli and Hazi Aslanov-Hazi Aslanov-2 transient metro stations, the existing problems with passenger transportation in Baku will be solved.

This will also make it possible for the Baku Metro to conduct passenger transportations from the Old Guneshli, New Guneshli, Old Ahmadli, New Ahmadli, Zikh, Hovsan, Garachukhur townships to the center of Baku.

At present, the Baku Metro's lines are 34.6 kilometers long.

The Azerbaijani capital's metro has two lines. As part of the program for development of the Baku Metro, the number of its lines will increase to five, the length - to 119 kilometers, and the number of its stations - to 76.

The Baku Metro has been operating since 1967 and has 23 stations. Previously, a 20-year program was adopted for the development of the Baku Metro.
