Now it is high time to use all the opportunities of the EU to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, who heads the six-month presidency of the EU, said to press conference in Baku today.

"We will do all our efforts to resolve this conflict," the Minister said.

According to Moratinos, the European Union has taken all the important measures to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. "Some people see the conflict as a protracted, but we believe that we should consider it as a solvable conflict," said the Minister.

He said that the EU respects the work of the OSCE Minsk Group and supports the Madrid principles, and if both sides take a constructive approach, the conflict can be resolved.

"Peace in Nagorno-Karabakh has become more real especially over the last two years, we see progress and are in the final stage of the conflict," the Minister said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied territories.
