Ukraine Calls Upon Strengthening UN Cooperation with Regional Organizations to Settle Conflicts in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova

UN General Assembly has held a sitting devoted to UN cooperation with regional organizations. Addressing its participants on behalf of GUAM member-states (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Moldova), Vladimir Khandogiy, Deputy Ukraine's Foreign Minister called upon strengthening UN coordination with regional organization in peacemaking activity, Trend reports referring to the information spread by UN.

Particularly, he suggested living up measures aimed at settling the lingering conflicts on the territory of Georgia, Moldova, and Azerbaijan. The Ukrainian representative drew his attention to the 15-year lingering period of these conflicts.

It is extremely important for the international community, UN and OSCE in particular, to do all of the possible to take each practical step to settle these conflicts which are the most serious barriers to stability. Democracy, and economic prosperity in our region, pointed out Mr. Khandogiy.

The Deputy Ukrainian Foreign Minister expressed hid gratitude top UN member-states for their support in introducing an issue of the lingering conflicts on the territories of GUM member-states and their consequences to security and prosperity all over the World to the agenda of UN general Assembly. He expressed a hope that this step will bring to more active measures to resolve conflicts in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova.

Mr. Khandogiy called upon all the interested parties to observe the resolutions of UN and decisions of OSCE concerning the Nagorno-Karabakh, and Georgian-Abkhazian conflicts, as well as launch implementing a plan on peaceful settlement of the South Ossetinian-Georgian conflict put forward by the Georgian President. He also attracted the attention of the international community to an initiative of the Ukrainian President concerning the Transdniester conflict settlement through democracy, and called upon to its implementation.

The representative of the Ukrainian Foreign Office said about the necessity on strengthening UN`s cooperation with GUAM, BSEDO (Black Sea Economic Development Organization), and OSCE. He pointed out that the Black Sea Organization makes an important contribution to the development of cooperation in the region in different spheres, particularly in energy one.

The energy security issue is one of the crucial ones for Europe today. The Black Sea and Caspian region is of a great importance for safe and stable conveying energy recourses to Europe. The GUAM member-states are ready to take their active part in energy projects advancing within BSEDO, pointed out the Ukrainian diplomat.
