A lawsuit was filed after a "death fatwa" was issued on an Azerbaijani member of parliament at a demonstration in the Nardaran settlement outside Baku, the Interior Ministry told Trend on Jan. 12.

Chairman of the Civil Solidarity Party (CSP) and member of parliament Sabir Rustamkhanli was threatened during a demonstration against Israel on Imam Huseyn Square in Nardaran on Jan. 9. Village elders said the Azerbaijani elite betray the nation by disseminating falsified information.

"Dishonest intelligentsia like Sabir Rustamkhanli betray our nation and slander Sahar TV [Iranian TV channel] that publicizes the truth about Azerbaijan's troubles," they said at the demonstration. "A Nardaran elder has thus passed a death fatwa on him. Rustamkhanli, get more bodyguards."

The Sabunchu District Police Office filed a lawsuit about the death fatwa according to Article 134 of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code on Threatening with Death or Serious Damage to Health.

The case is under investigation.
