Earthquake in Azerbaijani Region of Lankaran Region Measures a Magnitude of 5

Azerbaijan, Lankaran / Тrend corr P. Aliyeva / There was an earthquake that measured a magnitude of 5, 24km from the Azerbaijani region of Lankaran at 11.50am on 11 July. Earth tremors measuring 4 occurred in Lankaran and Lerik and measuring 3 in Jalilabad. According to initial information nobody was injured.

According to the Deputy Director of the Republican Seismology Centre at the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (NASA), Gurban Yetirmishli, such earthquakes are natural, as the Talysh area is considered to be seismically active. In the last six months of this year three noticeable earthquakes were registered in the area. In 1997, three earthquakes measuring 7 occurred in Talysh resulting in damage.

In total, during this year over ten noticeable earthquakes were registered in Azerbaijan.

Lankaran region is 265 km south of Baku.
