Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. A.Gasimova / The aim of the meeting of Russian experts with Americans is to persuade them to use the Gabala Radar Station. The Russian specialists will show Americans that the Gabala Radar Station can observe missiles, launched by Iran, Alexander Golts, the Russian military expert and analyst, the deputy editor-in-chief of the Weekly Magazine, said on 18 September.
Experts from Russia, the US and Azerbaijan will become familiar with the technical capacity of Gabala Radar Station for joint use.
The American expert group includes representatives of the Pentagon, Anti Missile Agency, the US Embassy in Azerbaijan, as well as radar specialists. The Russian group includes representatives of Central Departments of the Defense Ministry and Joint Staff, as well as Foreign Ministry. Representatives of the Defense Ministry, National Security Ministry, Foreign Ministry and National Science Academy Azerbaijan will represent Azerbaijan.
The US should refuse to install Anti Missile Defense system in Europe, and instead the international monitoring centre will be created in Gabala. The first stage of missile testing will take from three to five years. After observing the Iranian missile, Russia and US will have enough time to establish an anti missile defence around Iran, Golts said.
Gabala Radar Station situated in the north-west of Azerbaijan was built while the USSR was an important element of the USSR AMD. The 10-year agreement on leasing of the station was signed in 2002. Annual rent charges make up $14mln.
