Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / The US Government considers the necessity of assisting the organizations which play and important role to Azerbaijan to improve the situation with human rights in Iran, said the US Department of State's representative for Human Rights, Democracy and Labor, Kate Loor, at then meeting with the Leader of Azerbaijan National Independence Party (ANIP), Etibar Mammadov.
Mammadov said that the northern part of Iran is the ancient Azerbaijan territories. "The Azerbaijanis residing in South Azerbaijan (northern part of Iran) incur pressure, discrimination and assimilation," he said. In addition, Mammadov attracted attitude towards the necessity of international organizations' support to the national liberation movement in Iran.
Loor said that the Government of the USA is concerned about not only the nuclear program of Iran, but also the situation with human rights and democracy there.
According unofficial information, nearly 35mln Azerbaijanis reside in Iran.
