ICO to Increase Attention for Restoration of Stabilization in Iraq - UN Permanent Representative

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Aghayeva / Islamic Conference Organization (ICO) intends to liven up its participation in restoration of peace and stability in Iraq. The decision was taken by the OIC contact group on Iraq during the meeting held in New York within the framework of the UN Assembly General's 62nd session.

The contact group on Iraq including Azerbaijan, Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan, and Senegal focused on opening of ICO office in Baghdad, prevention of a split to sects, and consolidated combating violence, Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative in the UN, Agshin Mehdiyev, reported by phone from New-York.

Azerbaijan Foreign Minister, Elmar Mammadyarov, noted Azerbaijan's interest, as a chairing country in the ICO, in settlement of Iraq's problems, supporting sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

All member countries of the contact group expressed their readiness to make all efforts for establishment peace in Iraq, Mehdiyev said.

ICO including 57 countries was established in September 1969.
