Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. I.Alizadeh / The number of people to restore proportional election system in Azerbaijan increase. Reforms should be injected in the Azerbaijani election system.
Cancellation of the proportional election system and full transformation to the majority system did not give its positive results. Therefore, the proportional election system should be restored in Azerbaijan, MP Zahid Oruj, the chairman of the Ana Vatan Party, said during the first session of the autumn session of the Azerbaijani Parliament.
The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan had been held on mixed system, majority and proportional system, up to 2002. The proportional election system was cancelled at the Referendum on Constitutional reforms in 2002.
Azerbaijani opposition parties and international organizations want to restore the proportional election system in Azerbaijan. Some MPs from the ruling New Azerbaijan Party also support restoration of the system. Restoration of the proportional election system will allow normalizing party forms in Azerbaijan. I consider Azerbaijan should turn to mixed election system after restoration of the proportional election system, MP said.
