Changing Geographic Names to be Regulated through Law

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend I.Alizade / Azerbaijan's parliamentary commission discussed the draft law determining the names of the geographic facilities, restoring and changing previous names. "The working group took into consideration most of the recommendations and proposals made in the Parliament. The document was significantly improved," said the Chairman of Azerbaijan Parliament's Commission on Regional Affairs, Arif Rahimzade, at the meeting of the Commission on 13 December.

The new draft law defines legal grounds with regards to normalization, registration and protection of the geographic names which are significant part of the historical and cultural heritage of Azerbaijan.

According to the requirements of the draft law, in order to apply and protect geographic names, the executive powers should devise a State Catalogue of Geographic Names, dictionary of the names of the geographic names book of requests, prepare and publish maps.

According to the document, the geographic names should reflects their peculiarities, geographic history of its location, natural conditions, as well as the public opinion should be taken into consideration and the names should comprise of at least three words.

After discussions, the draft law was recommended to be discussed at the Parliament.
