Azerbaijani Opposition Party Chairman’s Powers to Replace General Secretary
Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. G.Jabiyev / Fuad Mukhtarov will chair the Azerbaijani National Independent Party (ANIP).
Rustamov, ANIP's chairman, appealed to the political board of the Party for his resignation in connection with some problems in his health on 25 December. ANIP leader Etibar Mammadov stated that Rustamov left the post due to his health problems and there were people who may replace him.
Mukhtarov said that under the party's Charter, general secretary must replace the chairman.
Mukhtarov said that he may nominate his candidature for the chairman post of the party.
"There are not favourable conditions for functioning of political parties in the country and I would not like to be the chairman in such apolitical conditions. I believe that I can make a lot of improvements if I would be elected the chairman," Mukhtarov said. .
ANIP was the first party received registration in Azerbaijan in 1992. Etibar Mammadov had been the founder and chairman of the party by 2004. Presently, Mammadov is the deputy chairman of the International Democratic Alliance.
