Azerbaijani President Invited to NATO   Summit

Azerbaijan, Baku 25 January / corr Trend K.Ramazanova / Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has been invited to the NATO summit due to be held in Bucharest on 2-4 April, Simon de Manso, the press officer of NATO said Trend from Brussels on 25 January.

Romanian President Train Basescu will host the event. The summit will be held under the chairmanship of Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the NATO Secretary General.

Attending the event will be head of states and governments of the NATO member-countries and partner- countries.

The basis of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO was laid in a frame document 'Partnership for Peace signed on 4 May 1994. Azerbaijan was one of 27 OSCE member-countries among first participants in this program.

In April 1996 an official document was signed within the framework of Partners for Peace Program, defining concrete direction of interaction. At present Azerbaijan is implementing its 50 partner tasks in accordance with this program.

On 3 August 2005 Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree to adopt an Action Plan on Individual Partnership between Azerbaijan and NATO.

Currently the cooperation is carried out within the framework of the second stage of Action Plan on Individual Partnership between Azerbaijan and NATO.
