Azerbaijan Increases Military Expenditure Once Again

Azerbaijan, Baku, 28 April / corr. Trend I. Alizade/ The Azerbaijan military expenditure is expected to be increased to AZN320 mln in 2008 indicated in the Bill on Changes to the State Budget for 2008 submitted to Parliament by the government.

The changes to be made to the state budget envisage the increase in military expenditure from AZN1.019 bln up to AZN1.344 bln or by 32%. Resources are expected to be put into defense, national security and the application investigations within areas of defense and security. According to the Bill, AZN1.263.531 of this amount will be directed towards the defense forces, AZN75 mln to national security, AZN2.686mln to the application investigation in defense and security and AZN1.816 mln towards other military requirements.

On 2 May, the Parliament of Azerbaijan will consider the increasing of the state budget of 2008. "The Bill to reconsider and administer changes to the 2008 state budget has been introduced to parliament," Vahid Ahmadov, the member of standing parliament commission on economic policy said to Trend on 28 April.

The document places the annual forecast on the income of the budget at AZN10.287 bln and expenditure at AZN10.530 bln. Previously, the income of the Azerbaijani state budget for 2008 was approved at AZN7.393 bln and expenditure at AZN8.519bln. If the new changes are approved, the income of the current budget of Azerbaijan will rise by almost 43% and expenditures by 26%.

The Cabinet of Ministers will make a report on the fulfillment of the state budget for 2007 on 2 May during the meeting of parliament.
