Despite Their Voting Right, Azerbaijani Military People Can not Interfere in Policy: CEC Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, 7 May /corr. Trend E.Babayev / The Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan said that the military people have not the right to carry out political act. "Despite that the representative of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan have the voting right, they can not interfere in policy," CEC Chairman, Mazahir Panahov, said on 7 May.

Commenting on the statement of Azerbaijan's Minister of Defence regarding Ilham Aliyev's nomination for presidency, the Head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, Ramiz Mehdiyev, said on 7 May that the Army should not interfere in the policy.

"The Constitution of Azerbaijan says that the Armed Forces should not interfere in the policy," Mehdiyev said.

Azerbaijan's Minister of Defence, Safar Abiyev, said on 5 May that he supports Ilham Aliyev's candidature in the Presidential elections in Azerbaijan in October 2008.

Ilham Aliyev was elected President in 2003. He has been chairing ruling New Azerbaijan Party since 2005.
