Number of Signatures Necessary to Register Presidential Candidates Reduced

Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 June / Trend corr. I.Alizade / The number of signatures necessary to register presidential candidates has been decreased in Azerbaijan. "The number of electorate signatures, which the candidates have to present to the Central Election Commission for registration, has been reduced from 45,000 to 40,000," Ali Huseynov, Chairman of the Standing Parliamentary Commission on Legal Policy and State Building , stated on 2 June.

On 30 May, the Azerbaijani Parliament discussed the draft on amendments and supplements into the Election Code.

The draft on the Election Code was developed as a result of the joint discussions between the Azerbaijani government and Council of Europe Venice Commission. Venice Commission positively assesses the proposals made by the Azerbaijani government.

Huseynov said that new changes have been made into the draft. The draft has been submitted to the MPs.

"The term of election campaign was decreased from 120 days to 75 days as a result of MPs' proposals," Huseynov said. According Huseynov, the candidate registration at the expense of money deposit has been canceled as per the new changes.

Previously, the candidates who failed to collect necessary number of signatures had to pay AZN 333,000.
