Azerbaijani Opposition Need to Devise New Tactics for Political Struggle – Opinion

Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 June / Trend corr. I.Alizade / The Musavat MP group considers that the opposition should devise new tactics for a political struggle. "There is no sense to participate in the forthcoming presidential elections with the current version of the draft into the Election Code. Opposition should start unsanctioned rallies," Panah Huseyn, a member of Musavat MP Group, stated to journalists.

According to Trend , the draft of amendments and supplements into the Election Code of Azerbaijan were passed by the Parliament on 2 June.

Under the current draft, the term of election campaign was decreased from 120 days to 75 days and number of electorate signatures, which the candidates have to present to the Central Election Commission for registration, was cut from 45,000 to 40,000, as well as there was put a prohibition to hold paid and free agitation on TV, radio and newspaper, financed by the government, the election fund of presidential candidates was increased from AZN 1mln and AZN 10mln and install of election centres in military units was cancelled.

Some 100 people vote for, three against and one restrained from voting regarding the amendments and supplements into the Election Code.

The draft of amendments and supplements into the Election Code were introduced into the Election Code as a result of the joint discussions between the Azerbaijani government and Council of Europe Venice Commission.

"The authorities encourage opposition to take radical steps by adoption the draft. Therefore, there is need to develop new tactics," Huseyn said.
