PACE Approves Rapporteur on Ukraine’s Holodomor

Ukraine, Kiev, 26 June / Trend corr Z. Novosvitski/ "The meeting of the Political Committee of PACE (Parliamentary Committee of the Council of Europe) approved a rapporteur to investigate the Holodomor (famine-genocide) as totalitarian regime's crime in Ukraine and other territory of the Soviet Union. The rapporteur is Vice-President of PACE Alexandеr Biberaj (Albania)," said Olga Gerasimuk, Deputy Chairman of Ukraine's standing delegation to PACE, people's MP from the 'Our Ukraine-People's Self-defence' parliamentary group (NU-NS).

"Biberaj was unanimously nominated by the largest political group at PACE - European People's Party," she said.

"The rapporteur, who was approved by the Political Committee, voiced his position on his further report. He said the report must reflect two different issues - separately Holodomor in Ukraine and separately mass famine in former USSR," Gerasimuk said. Biberaj will propose the name of his report by the next meeting of the Political Committee to take place in September.

According to several Ukrainian historians, the famine of 1932-1933 killed about 7-10mln of people. According to Russian historians, the famine of 1932-1933 covered main grain producing areas of the USSR - Ukraine, North Caucasus, Lower and Middle Volga Region, great part of Central Chernozem Oblast, Kazakhstan, West Siberia and South Ural. According to different reports, about 7-8mln people died from the famine, with 3-3.5mln of them in Ukraine. Official Kiev insists on recognition of the events as the genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Up to now, 17 Parliaments recognized the Holodomor of the 30s as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
