Russia, Khanty-Mansiysk, 28 June / Trend corr R. Agayev/ " Russia and European Union (EU) are commencing negotiations over a new agreement on relationships between Russia and EU," was said during a joint statement during the Russia-EU summit in Khanty-Mansiysk.

"We agreed that the purpose of the work will be to strike a strategic agreement which will set a comprehensive basis for Russia-EU relations in the foreseeable future and will promote development of the potential of our partnership," the statement says.

The agreement must consolidate the legal basis of juridical commitments in main interaction fields, which lie in the 'Road Maps' on four general areas of Russia-EU and which were approved at the Russia-EU summit in Moscow in May 2005.

The new agreement is based on international obligations and conventions of Russia and EU and it will replace the current partnership agreement.

On 27 June, the Russia-EU summit commenced with a high-level meeting which included Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev, Slovenian Prime Minister, who is currently chairing EU, Janez Jansa, chairman of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barosso, as well as EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.
