Azerbaijan Opposition Party to Nominate Country’s President for Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, 13 August / Trend corr. E.Babayev/ Azerbaijan opposition Vahdat party intends to support country's current President Ilham Aliyev as the presidential contender of the governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP).

"On 16 August, the Supreme Assembly of the party will make a decision conforming to our political course. Probably, the decision will be to support Ilham Aliyev," Chairman of the Vahdat Tahir Karimli said to Trend on 13 August.

Presidential elections will take place in Azerbaijan on 15 October. Vahdat, headed by the former Chairman of the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan, former MP Tahir Karimli, was sticking to the oppositional position up to 2006. Now, the party is supporting the political course of the authorities.

On 2 August, the NAP convention officially nominated Ilham Aliyev. President's candidature has been nominated by the Ana Vatan and Social Prosperity parties so far. Moreover, he was nominated by the Trade Union Association of Azerbaijan and the Red Crescent Association of Azerbaijan.

According to Karimli, the Supreme Assembly is unlikely to decide not to support the authorities' candidate. "I do not intend to nominate myself," he said.
