Azerbaijan, Baku, 4 September / Trend corr. R.Novruzov / The Council of Europe may examine apply of the Azerbaijani opposition with the call not to send the international observers to the upcoming presidential elections.
The presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan on 15 October. Majority of the opposition parties boycotted the presidential elections. The Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) began to negotiate to establish new cooperation centre of opposition. The parties representing in Azadlig bloc (the National Front Party, the Liberal Party and the Citizen and Development Party), as well as the Classical Popular Front Party, the Open Society Party, the Musavat Party and the Public Forum of 'For Azerbaijan' participate in these negotiations. These parties intend to send apply to the CE, the OSCE and other European organizations with the call not to send international observers to the elections.
"If apply is well argued, the CE will examine it," Andreas Herkel, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe reporter for Azerbaijan told Trend over the telephone from Tallinn on 4 September.
According to Herkel, the CE intends to participate in the pre-elections process and to observe the presidential elections in Azerbaijan.
Herkel will lead the CE observation mission, which will arrive in Baku several days before the elections.
The Azerbaijani Central Elections Commission confirmed candidature of 20 people appealing to the presidential post. Two of them were officially registered.
