Venice Commission to Dispatch Experts to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 10 September / Trend corr. J.Babayeva/ The Venice Commission of the Council of Europe (CE) intends to dispatch experts to Azerbaijan to investigate the violations which may occur during presidential elections.

Venice Commission' Secretary Gianni Buquicchio applied to the Chairman of the Azerbaijan Central Election Commission on 9 September requesting to assist the operation of the expert group. The Venice Commission experts will arrive in Azerbaijan a day before the elections. Azerbaijan agreed to assist experts' work.

Presidential elections will take place in Azerbaijan on 15 October.

Twenty-one candidates have applied for presidency in Azerbaijan: Ilham Aliyev, the chairman of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party; Igbal Agazade, the chairman of the Umid Party; Hafiz Hajiyev, the chairman of the Muasir Musavat party; Gudrat Hasanguliyev, the chairman of the Azerbaijani Unified Popular Front Party; Fazil Gazanfaroglu, the chairman of the Great Establishment Party; Mais Gulaliyev, chairman of the Green Policy initiative group; poet Agaevli Ali Isa; Fuad Aliyev, the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party; independent candidate Gulamhuseyn Alibayli. They collected the required 40,000 signatures and submitted them to the Central Election Commission.
