Problems for Upcoming Presidential Elections in Afghanistan May be Resolved by Press

Afghanistan, Kabul, 25 September /corr. Trend А.Hakimi / The Election Commission of Afghanistan tries to, with the help of the press, solve the probable problems for the upcoming presidential elections and increase the stimulus of population to activate the participation in the elections.The Head of the Press Service of the Election Commission of Afghanistan, Mahad Davud Najafi, said that in order to hold transparent and successful elections in Afghanistan, the press must enlighten population regarding the significance of this process.

He said that the co-operation between the Election Commission and press may contribute to eliminate probable obstacles in holding elections.

At the meeting with the heads of the press organizations of the country, the Election Commission held discussions on an increase in the participation of population in the elections. Many politicians and party leaders of the country are concerned by the fact that the instability in Afghanistan will negatively affect the election process.The experts say that holding elections in the country is impossible under the situation, when the security is not ensured, and serious measures are not undertaken with regards to the oppositionists, who speak against the power,.

If the presidential elections do not take place in Afghanistan, the Council of Elders will be established and Hamid Karzai will again head the country in spite of dissatisfaction of Afghan people with his governance.

The Press Secretary of the Election Commission of Afghanistan, Zakariya Barkazi, said that the citizens of the country were dissatisfied both with the activity of government and with the economic situation in the country. Therefore, they do not want to participate in the elections.

He said that due to it, the Election Commission intends to increase the interest of the citizens in the election process with the held of press.

According to the information provided by the Election Commission of Afghanistan, 12.6mln people, with 41% woman, participated in the last elections.

The citizens over 18 years of age have the right to participate in the elections in Afghanistan.

To ensure transparent elections, the Election Commission of Afghanistan made a decision to present special permits to the press representatives and observers.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will take place next year.
