NATO Secretary General Assesess Azerbaijan's Presidential Election

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 October/ Trend , J. Babayeva/ " Azerbaijan is a standing and valuable partner of NATO and we look forward to continuing and strengthening our dialogue and practical cooperation, and our support to reforms," said the statement by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on the presidential election in Azerbaijan.

NATO approves reports of international observers from OSCE, Council of Europe and European Parliament on the results of presidential election in Azerbaijan which indicate progress in conduct of the election. There is a significant progress in the election, but it does not fully meet international commitments undertaken by the country, document said.

Meanwhile, heads of CIS and GUAM missions and a number of European countries stated that election in Azerbaijan was democratic and conformed to the demands of the international organizations.

The presidential election in Azerbaijan was held on 15 October. According to the preliminary results, Ilham Aliyev, candidate from ruling party and current president won 88.73% of votes.

Seven candidates were running for presidency at the 15 October presidential election. Igbal Agazade won 2.86%, Fazil Gazanfaroglu - 2.47%, Gudrat Hasanguliyev - 2.28%, Gulamhuseyn Alibayli - 2.23%, Fuad Aliyev - 0.78% and Hafiz Hajiyev - 0.65%.
