Georgia Must Do Much for Membership to NATO: U.S. Assistant Secretary of State

Georgia, Tbilisi, 20 October /corr. Trend N.Kirtskhalia / Georgia must do much for membership to NATO. Daniel Fried, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, who is on visit to Georgia, said to briefing that "the advancement of Georgia towards NATO depends on its progress".

"The doors of alliance will be opened for Georgia, and Georgia itself must carry out all necessary work for entrance to NATO," said Fried. According to Fried, at the Bucharest summit, the leaders of NATO confirmed that Georgia will surely become the member of alliance. The achievements of the country in this regard will be considered in December.

Fried also commented on the possibility of avoidance of the Russian aggression in the case of presenting Georgia the MAP at the Bucharest summit. According to the American diplomat, the fifth paragraph of alliance acts for the members of NATO in the case of aggression by other state. "This paragraph does not act for those countries, which obtained MAP program," stated Fried.
