Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 13 / Trend , J.Babayeva /

The Azerbaijan Communist Party (ACP) is concerned with dismantling of the memorial to 26 Baku Commissars.

"ACP believes this undermines the Azerbaijan's international image. Destruction of monuments of the Soviet period is disrespect for the past and future of the Azerbaijani nation," Chairman of the ACP Central Committee Rauf Kurbanov said.

The work on dismantling of the memorial to 26 Baku Commissars was launched in the Sahil public garden on Jan. 12. The Baku City Administration made a decision to reconstruct the garden and build a car park under it.

The monument to 26 Baku Commissars was erected by a well-known Soviet sculptor Merkulov. The main section of the complex, which consists of intagliated figures of commissars, was dismantled immediately after the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict began by the demand of the city population.

Nobody can falsify the history or erase the socialist period from the memory of population.

"On the other hand, Baku was an international city and the communal grave to 26 Baku Commissars was a vivid example. The fact that the monument has not been destructed demonstrates political pluralism, tolerance, high political culture and main difference of the Azerbaijani population from others," the Committee said.

The Communist Party demands to stop dismantling of the monument immediately.
