Kazakhstan's parliament has postponed the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol.
The Parliamentary Committee of the House for International, Defense and Security Affairs decided against passing the Bill on the Ratification of the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Convention on Climate Change. The issue will be discussed in detail at round-table talks.
"The ratification of the Kyoto Protocol will enable the country to boost economic growth, address power-intensity issues, pursue an energy-efficient policy and provide transparency in all economic sectors," said Environmental Protection Deputy Minister Aljan Braliyev.
Kazakhstan was among 192 countries to ratify the UN Convention on Climate Change in March 1995.
The Kyoto Protocol to the UN Convention on Climate Change was ratified by 181 countries and the EU. Kazakhstan signed the Kyoto Protocol based on a presidential decree in March 1999. It has not yet ratified the document.
