Turkmenistan, Iranian presidents begin talks on Caspian Sea status

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad began talks on international challenges, including the status of the Caspian Sea, an official Turkmen source said.

Today the sides will review possible cooperation in the commercial, economic, transport and energy sectors. Intergovernmental documents will be signed.

Bedimuhamedov is on a two-day visit to Tehran.

Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia border the Caspian, which is rich in hydrocarbons and biological resources.

Talks to define the legal status of the Caspian began after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
