Azerbaijani opposition agitation groups’ authorized representatives and lawyers chosen

On Feb. 24, the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC) elected members of the commission who will have the right to a consultative vote from among authorized representatives and lawyers of opposition referendum initiative groups.

Anvar Aliyev was elected a member of the commission from the Movement For Karabakh and the Republic group, and Osman Kazimov - from the Republicans group.

A total of 18 authorized representatives and 25 lawyers were appointed from the Movement For Karabakh and 74 authorized representatives and 25 lawyers - from the Republicans.

Azerbaijan will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend the Constitution.

The CEC registered the New Azerbaijan, Shahar, Tereggi, Huquq Va Demokratiya, Vatandash Jamiyyati, For Long-Term Development, Zaka, Movement For Karabakh and the Republic and Republicans groups. The Abad Kand, Azad Soz, Azerbaijan People's Republic and Milli Istiglal groups failed to pass registration.

The Azerbaijani Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

The CEC registered 569 local monitors to observe the referendum, CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov said at a meeting.

Totally, 11,230 monitors were registered at constituencies.
