Georgian interior ministry spreads statement on yesterday's events

Big group of protest action gathered near the state internal affairs department and violated borders of fence at 19:30 on May 6.

Police maximally refrained from response actions until participants of the action came near the fence and tries to destroy it. Six policemen injured while protecting head department and detention isolator, as well as 22 participants of action and journalist of Channel 1.  

Participants of the action, gathering in front of the parliament before incident, tried to enter the state internal affairs department. They were provoked by opposition leader Giya Gachechiladze. He stated that the action aimed to release three activist of opposition detained on May 5. He was detained because of attack for journalist. Gachechiladze climbed over a fence of the state internal affairs department and entered the territory.

As a result of yesterday's incident, policemen, participants of the action and journalists were not injured seriously. All injured were placed in hospitals. Nobody of participants of the action was detained. The government and opposition acted reservedly after protest began on April 9. Free meeting was completely implemented. Despite all this, yesterday's attack for the police was serious violation of law and law order. The police's reaction was proportional to the threat. The Georgian government will do its best to protect leadership of law and rights of all sides - participants of the action and the police. Right of protest is not limited. The government will also protect its rights by legal methods.
