Georgian opposition youth leader sentenced two-month imprisonment before trial

The Tbilisi City Court sentenced Member of the April 9 Youth Staff Levan Gogichaishvili to two-month imprisonment before trial.

The court rejected a demand of the lawyer of the accused on bail. There were not any witnesses at the trial.

The Georgian Interior Ministry reported that Gogichaishvili is suspected of causing grievous bodily harm with knives to a 17-year old David Lezhava. It is an incident in Tskhneti after the birthday party of a daughter of one opposition leader Irakli Batiashvili - Irina Batiashvili, in which Irina's friend David Lezhava was injured. The investigation is conducted in accordance with the first paragraph of the Article 117 of the Georgian Criminal Code, which envisages three- or five-year imprisonment.

The lawyer of the accused will lodge complaint with the Appeals Court against the city court's resolution. Natiya Korkotadze believes that there is no need to keep Gogichaishvili in prison till the trial, because he does not hiding from the police.
