U.S.-Russian relations can be put on solid foundation: Obama (UPDATE)

Russia and the United States will not be able to solve all the problems, but there is an opportunity to put relations of the two countries on a solid foundation, U.S. President Barack Obama said on July 7, RIA Novosti reported.

"I think that now we have a great opportunity to put the US-Russian relations on a solid foundation," Obama said during a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

"Maybe, we will not agree on everything, but we will discuss, based on mutual respect and interests of the Russian and American peoples," Obama said.

Obama thanked Putin for his finding time to meet with him.

"We had great discussions yesterday with President Medvedev," the U.S. president said.

"I know about the wonderful work that you did for the Russian people during your presidency term and are now doing in the current post of prime minister," Obama added.

Vladimir Putin headed the government in May last year, after serving as the president of the Russian Federation for 8 years.
