A UN program for Turkmen development assistance over 2010-2015 has been signed in Ashgabat. It is a basic document of cooperation between the Turkmen government and the organizations' agencies accredited in Turkmenistan.
The heads of UN sub-offices, including the UN Development Program, UNICEF, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Health Organization (WHO) and national partners participated in the ceremony. The new document stressed the development and implementation of projects aimed to combat illegal drug trafficking, organized criminality, terrorism, etc.
The UN program for development assistance planned for six years covers a variety of areas, including strategic spheres - education, health, ecology, society and law. The UN Permanent Coordinator in Turkmenistan, Richard Yang, told media that the signing of this program was aimed at achieving the stabile development of Turkmenistan, taking into account national interests and the priority of state development. This program opens a new page in the history of the long cooperation between the UN and Turkmenistan.
During the last government meeting, Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov said that Turkmenistan pays special attention to the partnership with the UN and sets it out on a long-term basis.
The establishment of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy in Ashgabat has been the result of fruitful joint work over the years.
